Unknown Worlds Part 2: Exciting Xbox Rumors

Last time, I left off with a teaser that there are some first party Xbox studios that have already shown content but likely have more to show, so today we’ll get into those Xbox rumors. If you haven’t already, check out the previous post here about the Xbox Game Studios that have yet to show content this year.

At the Xbox Games Showcase in July, Playground Games showed off one of the biggest games of the show, a brand new installment in the Fable series. However, they have another team that is developing a game and has yet to have been shown. The latest rumors are everywhere that they are developing a 5th installment in the wildly successful Forza Horizon series.

Another studio that has been confirmed to have mutliple teams working on projects and only one shown at the moment is Double Fine. Currently expected to release Psychonauts 2 this holiday, they have had a team at work on another game since at least 2018. This game is one of the most shrouded in mystery, there are rumors of it being Banjo-Kazooie, Iron Brigade 2, to a completely new IP action-adventure game. The game development is being led by a Senior game designer that previously worked on The Last of Us II, Fable II and The Division, so it certainly seems like it could lean towards having more elements of open world and action.

A studio that already showed two games in development, Obsidian, is confirmed to have another small team, including the head of the studio working on a small title, but nothing has leaked about this game and it is unlikely to be shown this year. Additionally, Obsidian is rumored to be gearing up production of The Outer Worlds 2 and has shifted some of the team that had been working on The Outer Worlds DLC to development of the sequel. I do not expect to hear about The Outer Worlds 2 this year.

Finally, 343 studios is confirmed to have a second team working on a new title. There has been much discussion about this as the team has changed up a bit from the team that developed Halo Wars II and may be gaining personnel to ramp up a Halo spin-off. This ones all speculation though, all we know right now is there is definitely a second team developing a new title.

Xbox Bringing the RPG’s

The July Xbox Games Showcase signaled that Xbox is making a big time commitment to bringing RPG’s to the console. There were major announcements of three huge new next-gen first party titles with Playground Games announcing Fable, Obsidian announcing Avowed and Undead Labs announcing State of Decay 3. Fable looks to be a reimagining of the world of Albion and from the looks of the trailer will be bringing back the elements that made the first two installments great! Avowed looks to be a Skyrim type game, which should have everyone excited.

They also announced that they were bringing Dragon Quest XI as well, marking the first appearance of the series Xbox. This is similar to how the Final Fantasy games all (expect the current FF 7 remake) made their way to Xbox. This is likely a trend that will continue as Xbox builds out their JRPG catalog.

The significance of three major first party RPG’s shouldn’t be understated, but is also just the start of their move to be the RPG console of choice. There is another rumored large AAA RPG in development by inXile (acquired by Microsoft in 2018) and reportedly The Outer Worlds 2 is already in development and exclusive to the Xbox Series X. Some reports have also mentioned that Compulsion games is working on an action RPG.

The investment has extended beyond their first party studios, as they aggressively acquired the marketing rights to Cyberpunk 2077, Watch Dogs Legion and Far Cry 6. It will remain interesting to see what happens with third party RPG titles like Final Fantasy 16 and the next Mass Effect game. One things for sure though, whatever happens, I’ll be talking about it!

Unknown Worlds: Part 1, Big Games in the Wings

Who doesn’t enjoy some good old fashioned speculation? I know that I do, so I’ll be starting this series of posts to explore the rumors and speculation that exists.

Today, I want to talk about something Matt Booty said during the July 2020 Xbox Games Showcase towards the end of the show (around the 54 minute mark, Xbox Showcase here). He said, “Now, you may have noticed we didn’t get to visit all of our Xbox Game Studios today. That means we’ll have more to share later this year”. This is clearly implying they held a few things back to show us later this year, but what could they be?

Reviewing the content of the show, it appears that there were 9 of 15 (currently) Xbox Game Studios shown at the Xbox Games Showcase. The studios that weren’t shown are:

  • inXile Studios
  • The Initiative
  • The Coalition
  • Mojang
  • World’s Edge
  • Compulsion Games

There is a lot of possible content between those studios, but I’ll stick to the rumors of unannounced games that are out there currently:

  • inXile
    • AAA RPG (not much detail)
  • The Initiative
    • AAAA game set in the Perfect Dark universe
    • Action adventure game with movie quality graphics and actors
  • The Coalition
    • Gears 6
    • Perfect Dark game
  • Mojang
    • Minecraft DLC – not much else is known or rumored, but there are over 350 people on the team so it is quite possible there is something in the works
  • Worlds Edge
    • Age of Empires 4
  • Compulsion Games
    • Big Puzzle Game
    • AAA ARPG

It’s also possible that there is some content from studios that did show content or from the Xbox Game Studios Publishing arm. However, I will keep that discussion for another segment of Unknown Worlds!
